Organize

I acquired knowledge of the rationale and theories behind the information organization systems, including Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress. I learned the provenance-based federal Superintendent of Documents system and expanded my grasp of archival organization and descriptive concept standards.

I believe that the organization of information underpins the foundations of librarianship by ensuring that users can easily retrieve recorded knowledge.

I found that retrieving born-digital documents, especially electronic correspondence and journals, is difficult because of the lack of agreement regarding best practices to preserve and index born-digital personal papers, such as blogs. To address this issue, I created the annotated bibliography Corralling the Wild Web 2.0: An Annotated Bibliography Dealing with the Archival Organizing of Personal Records Born in the Online Environment (below).

Since completing this bibliography, I have learned about government records librarians' and state archivists' efforts to preserve and index government websites. I believe that their work will give rise to best practices for preservation and organization of online artifacts.
