Mozilla's Webmaker takes the idea of Maker Space and puts it on the web. Each online project offers a split screen with the html code of the left and the preview on the right. Sort of like using Dream Weaver. The html also has tips written in. Very cool concept.
I love the way the Webmaker sets these up because you need for these projects is high-speed internet access, very basic sense of html code, and for these two templates membership in an online photo sharing service, such as Instagram or Flickr, and have patience.
It seems like a great way to offer make what would seem complex code to the un-techy easy to do. I thought what a fun way to introduce html coding to teens and tweens.
I tried it first with the Meme Maker, which had just one image. I did great with the inputting type, not so much with the image (or the hipster irony.) My duck image didn't load up. See here: https://librarymarta.makes.org/thimble/librarymartas-meme-attempt
So I scratched my head and thought about it and decided to try the Comic Maker. Maybe that template works better, I thought. Same problem. No example to share.
So I looked at the code. Images are something I am still learning to look at every part of the code. Ah ha! I saw the example code had jpg in it. That means it's an URL for downloading the image and I knew how to get that from Flickr! (Basically go to download image under the show all sizes. Right click on download image and open in new tab. Cancel download pop-up and copy and paste URL.)
There were a few more tweaks, like adding http:// because when you copy URLs these days, that doesn't copy, but htlm needs that info.
So now I have a Meme with a duck and a cartoon of a day trip a friend of mine and I took with a Meet-Up group to Mercer Slough.
